The Entrance Surf Club Wins Major NSW Awards
Wyong Shire Council would like to congratulate one of its oldest surf clubs for winning a number of key awards and gaining nation-wide interest on one of their programs.
The Entrance Surf Club was founded in 1922 and has been most recently recognised for their dedication to the community at a regional and state level.
Council’s Mayor, Doug Eaton OAM, said the awards recognise the vital role the surf club volunteers play in keeping our community safe during the beach season.
“These awards are an amazing credit to the volunteers and The Entrance Surf Club.
“They are one of the smallest clubs, yet managed to come home with two major awards – beating volunteers from 130 other clubs across NSW.”
So far this year The Entrance Surf Club has received awards for:
- Central Coast Surf Life Saving Volunteer of the Year 2014/15 – President Glenn Clarke
- Central Coast Surf Life Saving Official of the Year 2014/15 – Life Member Ken Sellers
- NSW Surf Life Saving Volunteer of the Year 2014/15 – President Glenn Clarke
- NSW Surf Life Saving Initiative of the Year 2014/15 – Adopt-A-Nipper
- NSW Water Safety Awards and NSW AUSTSWIM State Awards of Excellence 2014/15, Local Community Initiative of the Year – Adopt-A-Nipper
President Glenn Clarke
During the season, President Glenn Clarke spent over 150 hours on patrol and a further 160 hours as on-call Duty Officer. As part of that responsibility he attended incidents at Pearl Beach, Birdie Beach and the notorious Snapper Point.
“Glenn was also a part of the committee that helped get the award-winning Adopt-A-Nipper program up and running.
“This program is a great initiative from a small group of volunteers who wanted to increase numbers in the nippers program at The Entrance.
“This program is now receiving recognition from Australia Surf Life Saving.”
‘Little Nippers’ Television Cartoon/Community Service Announcement
The Adopt-A-Nipper Team have also created a cartoon which features celebrity voices such as Darryl Brohman (aka The Big Marn from The Footy Show) and Rodney Rude and is aimed at encouraging kids to join their local nippers.
The cartoon is different to your typical surf life saving commercial and will definitely get people talking, give people a laugh and remind kids to sign up to nippers this season.
“I’m proud to see our volunteers being recognised for the important role they play in our community.
“I can’t wait to see this commercial on our local NBN television and eventually nation-wide.
“The club is doing their bit to increase numbers and we are also doing our bit to ensure the club continues to survive and prosper and continue their great community service.
The Entrance Surf Club Café & Restaurant & Sand On The Beach
“At our last Council meeting, we approved the amended lease to allow a café/restaurant to operate on the top floor of the surf club.
“This is a real win-win as it will bring some much needed income to the surf club and attract more visitors to the beach.
“But more importantly, extra pipes were delivered last week to help pump extra sand from the channel directly on to the beach.
“The pipes will be connected to the dredge in the coming weeks and we are hoping the extra sand will help with the erosion issue.
“The surf club volunteers patrol our six beaches every weekend and public holidays, giving up their free time to make sure beach goers are safe in the surf.”
The official beach season is now underway and will finish at the end of April – so there’s still plenty of time to join your local surf club!
