Ice Taskforce Interim Report
“It was pleasing to see the National Ice Taskforce interim report was presented to COAG yesterday as promised.
Consultations undertaken Australia–wide, including our very own Central Coast Ice Summit, have confirmed that Ice use is ruining individuals, destroying families and hurting communities.
Within the six identified areas that will provide the focus for the development of the National Ice Action Strategy, there is the inclusion of three of our four recommendations.
By narrowing our focus to work together regarding:
- law enforcement actions
- targeting primary prevention
- improving access to early intervention, treatment and support services
- supporting local communities to respond
- improving tools for frontline workers and,
- improving and consolidating research and data we can make significant efforts to address the scourge of ice in our community and in Australia.
It was also encouraging to see that COAG agreed to work together to ensure individuals and families affected by the drug have a single contact point where they can go to receive information, counselling and other support services.
This is similar to the Central Coast Ice Summit Submission’s suggestion to create a One Stop, Drug Stop website.
The Taskforce will continue working with the Prime Minister, the Australian National Advisory Council on Alcohol and Drugs, the States and Territories and the Australian Local Government Association to develop a final report and strategy to be considered by COAG before the end of the year.
Mrs McNamara Still Fighting For A Local Drug Court For The Central Coast
I will still continue to fight for the provision of a local drug court for the Central Coast. I believe that a local drug court is a high priority for our area and will provide a direct link to dealing with the issue of drug offences and transitioning into rehabilitation services.
The problem of Ice within our community will not go away overnight. And I’m in this fight for the long haul!
I plan to work closely with community service providers, law enforcement agencies, local health services and the community to help stop this insidious drug destroying our local community.
Ice remains a significant threat to families and communities across Australia, and all governments need to work together to send a strong message that ice is a harmful drug and its use is not acceptable.”
