Gaye Crispin on Gender Equity (Pt 1)
Tonight's post begins a 10 part series on Gender Equity.
Gender equity is about fairness, and about being fair to both women and men equally.
Both genders should be given equal access to resources and equal opportunities, as well as being given ways and means to benefit from this equality.
This is where the concept of ‘gender equity’ comes into play.
Gender equity is a fairness-focused concept. It’s all about fairness in the way women and men are treated. To achieve this fairness the different life experiences and needs of each gender are taken into consideration, and compensations are made for women’s historical and social disadvantages.
Where a lower status of women exists in a society it constitutes a handicap. If this is the case, provisions must be made to redress this inequality first if that society is serious about women being able to take full advantage of, and compete for, all the opportunities available in that society.
Gender equity levels the playing field for both genders, and this is what empowers women and our society. That’s why gender equity is essential to achieve true gender equality and a positively, powerfully transformed society.
